Rob Hagen, president of Avnet Electronics Marketing's Global Services Division, confirmed Avnet is in talks with Xilinx and a dozen of its other component franchises about providing logistics services based on an itemized fee schedule.

The fee-for-service business, known as Pivvot, is set to formally debut Jan. 1 and will be headed by Hagen. Pivvot will be able to leverage Avnet's global structure in terms of operations, IT system, and demand planning, a capability 3PLs have yet to develop, he said.

Additionally, Avnet and other distributors have domain expertise” in handling proprietary components and providing special services, such as device programming and breaking reels, that 3PLs are just learning.

That may change, however. Certain 3PLs are retooling the way they do business with high-tech customers, shifting from just moving pallets to providing additional services such as programming, repackaging, merge and transit, and subassembly at the distribution center.

The largest companies are moving quickly in this direction-and they're getting help from high-tech customers, said Jeff Langenfeld, senior manager of the fulfillment group at consultant Accenture Supply Chain Management, New York.

High-tech companies realize it will be difficult to find one provider who can do all of this globally,” he said. They also realize if they want this level of service, they have to provide training to the 3PLs.”

It helps to categorize and describe types of decisions, and list them in the contract. Which decisions are strategic to the direction of the business? Who will make these? May certain individuals make certain tactical decisions? May operational decisions be made by some individuals or subgroups, and not by others?

Teams typically use consensus for their strategic direction, and allow individuals to make tactical or operational decisions.

Teams require tools to get to the bottom of their disagreements. Examples of tools are preset guidelines, prioritization exercises, and Pareto charts. The contract should list appropriate tools.

The contract should specify behavioral expectations. For example:

Every team member must participate in decision-making discussions.”No team member may ridicule the views of other team members – either during or after meetings.”Possible solutions will be posted 24 hours before the team votes on the solution.”
