SAN JOSE, CALIF. — Pericom Semiconductor Corp. calls its PI6C110E SiliconClock for home PCs a complete system-timing solution for Intel's new 810E chip set. The part has been optimized for Celeron, Pentium II and Pentium III processors.

The La Fox, Ill., specialty distributor reported sales of $97.6 million, compared with $82.2million a year ago. Net income, however, remained flat at $3.27 million for the most recent period.

The company reported that gross margin for the first half of the fiscal year declined to 27% from 28.4% the prior year. The drop in margin is due to a change in product mix, the company said. First-half SG&A expenses were reduced to 20.5% of sales from 21.4% a year ago.

Sales gains were lead by the Solid State and Components Group, which specializes in RF and microwave components. Sales for the group increased 45% to $33.7 million.

Two of Richardson's other business units posted double-digit sales gains: the Security Systems Division's sales reached $21.2 million, up 25% from last year; and sales within the Display Products Group increased by 23% to $21.1 million.

SCO UnixWare 7 Non-Stop Clustering

SCO announced the shipping of SCO UnixWare 7 Non-Stop Clustering with Compaq at SCO Forum in August.Using either Siemens or Compaq servers or rackmount systems, which are connected by high-speed data cables, it is possible to provide extremely high fault tolerance using off-the-shelf computer systems. Take a computer in the cluster off-line, and the other computers in the cluster take over — the user does not see any change in application availability, and performance degrades only in linear (not catastrophic) fashion.

This technology originates from Compaq’s acquisition of Tandem Computers’famous Non-Stop Himalayan technology — often used in extremely high-availability applications such as aircraft traffic control, banks, and stock exchanges. It’s now available on Intel platforms for the first time, using SCO UnixWare 7 Non-Stop Clusters. Major achievements of this product are:

Single System Image. No matter how many systems are in the cluster (the current release limit is 16 systems), system administration and commands are executed as though there is only one computerwith one copy of the operating system. There have been slight adjustments to process table reporting, but these are minor. This eliminates some learning curve for system administrators.

Existing applications can take advantage of the environment immediately, without recompiles. If the system administrator wants, they can write UNIX scripts to enhance application performance and system administration reporting, but these scripts are not necessary. Installation of the Non-Stop Cluster product involvesthe purchase of the license and CD — load the latter, and the kernel is relinked to incorporate the Non-Stop Cluster functionality.
