Matsushita Electric Industrial, Hitachi and Toshiba have all posted sales falls and net losses for their most recent quarters.

Matsushita's sales were 10% down on last year to $51.7bn, Hitachi's were down 5% to $60.1bn and Toshiba's were down 9% to $40.6bn.

And the companies generally think that this situation will persist throughout the rest of the year as the Japanese economy struggles to catch up with the upturn that is beginning to be seen in the US.

Matushita expecting its full year sales to be just 3% up on last year, Hitachi expects a 1% increase and Toshiba projects the most with an 8% forecast rise.

At Matsushita, sales declines were seen in home appliances (down 10%), industrial equipment (down 38%) and components and devices (down 16%). It also saw drastically reduced” sales of mobile comms equipment, which helped push sales down 11% in its AVC Networks division.

Hitachi's electronic devices division was hit by plumetting” semiconductor sales, where sales were 26% down on the previous year, although other product divisions such as digital media and consumer products, excluding service-related businesses, registered sales increases.

Toshiba's information and communications systems business sales were 2% down, power systems and digital media were both down 1%, home appliances were down 4%. But most significant was the 31% sales fall at electronic devices and components.

South Portland, Maine-Fairchild Semiconductor International will release today 50 single-, dual- and triple-input logic functions in its 1.45 x 1-mm MicroPak chip-scale package, which is 65 percent smaller than an SC70. Besides single-gate logic, six-terminal MicroPak packages can accommodate more complex dual- and triple-input logic functions, including decoders, multiplexers, flip-flops, analog switches and configurable logic. Performance levels include the TinyLogic High-Speed (HS and HST) and Ultra High-Speed (UHS) families.

All 50 functions are available in production volumes. In 1,000-piece quantities, a two-input AND gate (NC7SZ08-L6) is 16 cents and a three-state buffer (NC7SZ125L6X) is 20 cents. Targets include cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players, digital cameras, notebooks and other portable products.

The package's 0.2 x 0.3-mm contact pads assure strong joint integrity, while its 0.5-mm pitch spacing is said to facilitate high yield at mounting and to ease manufacturing handling. The packages are lead-free and rated MSL-1.

By providing a large tool box of logic devices in MicroPaks, we are helping manufacturers upgrade designs and add features quickly and economically,” said logic-product manager Ken Murphy. The packages conserve board space, minimize trace lengths and minimize redesign,” he said.
