Fabless NeoEnergy has also signed up its first foundry partner: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC)

Chartered will be folded into GlobalFoundries, the former manufacturing division of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. floated as a separate entity earlier this year by ATIC, which injected funds into the company under a joint venture deal with the microprocessor and graphics IC vendor.

PARIS — Memscap SA, French provider of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), published consolidated revenues of 2.4 million euros ($3.58 million) for the third quarter of financial year 2009, ending Sept. 30, 2009. This compares to revenues of 2.2 million euros ($3.29 million) for the second quarter and 4.1 million euros ($6.13 million) for the third quarter of 2008.

For the third quarter of 2009, Memscap (Grenoble, France) reported a consolidated operating loss of 0.9 million euros ($1.34 million), compared to a loss of 2.2 million euros ($3.29 million) for the second of 2009. The company's net loss amounted to 0.9 million euros ($1.34 million), versus a net loss of 2.1 million euros ($3.14 million) in the second quarter of 2009.

Memscap said this relative improvement results can be explained by the cost reduction initiated by the group at the beginning of the year.

The MEMS provider specified that the Standard Product business unit was impacted by a lower than expected revenue due to purchase orders' postponement in the aerospace field. The Custom Products business unit, however, experienced a strong impetus with a 73 percent revenue increase in US dollars.

Looking ahead, Memscap said it expects that business improvement continues over the fourth quarter of 2009. It, however, maintains its cost reduction plan as the global economic environment remains uncertain.”

Note that the Grenoble-based company expressed the exact same predictions, using identical words, for the third quarter of 2009.

PARIS — NXP BV (Eindhoven, The Netherlands) achieved a net profit of $412 million on third quarter sales of $1,034 million. This compares to a net profit of $344 million in the second quarter of 2009 and to a loss of $2,540 million in the third quarter of 2008.

NXP's third quarter sales of $1,034 million were up 19.2 percent on a sequential basis. Such increase in sales was visible across all business segments and regions, the company stated.

But the main star of the ARM 2009 show is the A5, aka Sparrow, a new entry-level member of the Cortex family. It is positioned as the logical upgrade for today's ARM926EJ-S and ARM11 cores, bringing that diverse set of products under one software-compatible umbrella.

It's a good time for ARM to rationalize its product line. When this conference opens next year, Intel will be preparing to sample a 32nm version of its Atom processor, directly challenging for the first time ARM's nearly complete dominance of the huge mobile device market.

ARM has as much as 98 percent of the handset market. I am told they have an average of 2.5 processors per cellphone, and I believe it,” said Will Strauss, market watcher with Forward Concepts (Tempe, Ariz.).

ARM-based designs such as Marvell's Armada, Nvidia's Tegra, Qualcomm's Snapdragon and Texas Instrument's OMAP seek to push ARM's prowess beyond handsets into small notebooks and other mobile systems. But the world's biggest chip maker has a keen focus on using current and future versions of Atom to dominate netbooks and break into smart phones, a growth market beyond PCs it has long coveted.

The Cortex A5 resides well below the performance and the power consumption of any Intel Atom chips. It is also significantly above ARM's M series that is increasingly gaining traction in the even broader market of microcontrollers for embedded systems
