The build vs. buy argument on software development is front-and-center when it comes to considering developing IoT applications. A majority of all companies noted (65%) they are building IoT and M2M apps in-house, and 66% of all larger organizations are taking this in-house for the year to come up from just 56% in 2013.

It’s frustrating when you can barely get halfway through the day without completely draining your battery power or having the apps you use everyday crash or freeze. It turns out that these are two of the biggest gripes consumers have with their mobile devices. Thirty eight percent of respondents surveyed in our global study cited short battery life as the most common type of device shortcoming they experience, while another 13 percent complain of frozen or crashing apps.

Disgruntled users either head to Apple’s Genius Bar or try their luck at their wireless carrier’s nearest retail store. Consumers aren’t shy at all about what they expect – to have the problem resolved quickly and properly. Our survey found that 49 percent of respondents would seek help within the first three days. Nine percent of respondents are so addicted to their devices that they’d seek help in less than three hours.

But only a few representatives in each retail location really have the ability to fix devices.  A vast majority of the sales and customer service representatives you see in-store are not very seasoned and haven’t been given much training on how to diagnose and repair devices. Most carriers and device manufacturers don’t have a mobile diagnostics solution or technology onsite to close that skills gap. As a result, consumers are swapping their perceived faulty devices for new ones, or spending unnecessary money on replacement phones, when they could, in fact, easily be repaired.

There’s a lot of debate swirling around whether these kinds of functionality issues are caused by the device itself or by user errors. From what I’ve seen in working with carriers and OEMs in the US, Asia, Latin America and Europe, I can tell you that it’s becoming less and less frequent for mobile device faults to be associated with hardware issues. Instead, many of these supposed device faults tend to be caused by consumers’ media consumption habits.

This is where the big problem arises for mobile carriers and device manufacturers. They often put a lot of their focus – and marketing budgets – into creating massive ad campaigns to highlight their low prices, luring customers away from competitors by offering to pay their contract termination fees or showcasing their device inventory. But that’s not what really matters to most users. Customer service after the saleis what matters most, and that has a lot to do with making sure customers will be able to get their devices diagnosed and repaired quickly and effectively.

Because consumers’ tolerance with mobile device functionality issues is continuing to decrease, it’s more important than ever for both the carriers and the manufacturers to have a better grasp on the issues at-hand and more effective tools to identify and deal with them in a timely manner.  Best-in-class technology solutions combined with highly skilled, competent customer service and repair specialists are needed to improve the customer experience not only at the time of selling mobile devices, but also in the post-sales stage.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Officials with Taiwanese IC-packaging and test giant Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. (ASE) here outlined a bold strategy to enter the China market, telling SBN that the company plans to open two plants at two separate locations. The first facility is expected to be in production by early 2002.

The move–part of ASE's ongoing expansion–represents the latest entry into China's booming chip-packaging market. In fact, China's entire chip industry is growing at a time when other regions around the world are struggling with the severe 2001 semiconductor downturn.
