PLANO, Tex. — With prices collapsing in cable modem markets, Microtune Inc. today launched a new low-cost single-chip broadband tuner, which could potentially save about 25% in the bill of materials for frontend systems in cable modems.

The Plano-based company said the new MicroTuner MT2050 is the industry's first complete chip solution for radio-frequency (RF)/intermediate frequency (IF) frontends in modems that are compatible with the DOCSIS standard (data over cable service interface specification). The MT2050 RF-IF frontend device integrates a low-noise IF amplifier on a die size that is about one-fourth inches square, and it can reduce the space requirements for tuner functions by about 20%, Microtune said.

One of the big factor in cable modems has been the price drop,” noted Jim Fontaine, chief strategy officer at the Dallas area company. Last May, the prices for cable modems dropped below $100 from nearly $250 in the middle of 2000, and the projection now is that they could be selling for $50 by the end of this year or early 2003,” he told SBN .

The falling prices have put cable modem manufacturers and their chip suppliers under tremendous pressure. The digital demodulator function in cable modems has dropped from about $45 last year to a range of $10-to-$12, while the tuner–or transceiver–function has slipped to the $8-to-$10 range compared to $12-to-$15, according to Fontaine.

The new 2050 is designed to help customers on the cost issues,” he said. Microtune's new tuner chip is fabricated by IBM Corp. in a BiCMOS technology under a foundry agreement. The new tuner consumes about 1.6 watts of power, which is 11% lower than other implementations, said Microtune.

The MT2050 tuner is now sampling and priced at $5 each in quantities of 10,000. Microtune has developed a new reference board DOCSIS 2.0-compatible cable modems with Texas Instruments Inc., which is supplying the demodulator portion of the mockup design. The two companies recently announced a partnership to offer cable modem reference designs based on their products (see May 1 story).

W hat's the real guess-timate”…or estimate?

During a technology conference in San Francisco earlier this week, ASML Holding N.V. of the Netherlands predicted that its worldwide lithography-tool shipments would range from 170-200 units for 2002.

Magma president and chief operating officer Roy E. Jewell said in a prepared statement, We consider this nothing more than a nuisance lawsuit brought by a company whose software didn't function the way it was represented.”

Andy Bechtolsheim, Cisco Systems Inc.'s vice president of engineering, and former Advanced Micro Devices Inc. chief Atiq Raza, now with the venture capital firm Raza Foundries, are both members of Magma's board and were investors in Cadabra.

I was a passive investor in Cadabra and was never, ever involved in decision making around Prolific,” Bechtolsheim told EE Times.

Raza said that he too was a passive investor in Cadabra and denied a conflict of interest. I put $100,000 into Cadabra many years ago and forgot about them [the investment],” said Raza. It's not to say that $100,000 is an insignificant investment, but I've certainly made bigger investments. Cadabra is an extremely forgotten investment. And I've never even heard of Prolific.”

A Magma spokesman said that the redacted paragraphs in the filing, including those under the section Undisclosed conflict of interest regarding Cadabra,” only seal from public viewing Prolific's and Magma's internal development efforts and confidential business negotiations.”
