It's almost like developing a Web page,” Rego said. You come up with the scripting language, but at a very high level, define an architecture for the game, how you are going to move everything, what animations are going to occur, and so on. Then we wrote all the background software that went into the low-level execution.”

TI has recently pulled staff from various business units into its newly created Medical Device Group. Its strategy is to target the unique requirements of the growing medical-electronics sector. TI is working on a 20- to 30-Mips digital signal processor for products like implantable medical devices.

In the keynote, Templeton outlined another key driver. TI is pushing the performance of its chips, but the challenge is to speed up product development and bring down the power consumption by an order of magnitude or ''two orders of magnitude,'' he said. That, in turn, will open new markets for TI, he added.

He also said that there are other major opportunities for chip makers, given the sudden rise of 3 billion new global consumers. Many of those consumers have emerged in developing countries like China, India and Russia, he said. ''The opportunities are in front of us,'' Templeton added.

While TI is seeking new markets, the company remains strong in two basic sectors: DSPs and analog. In 2006, TI had a dominate 62 percent market share in DSPs, according to Forward Concepts Co. In the sector, Freescale had a 13 percent share in 2006, Agere had 7 percent, Analog Devices had 6 percent, and others had 11 percent, according to the firm.

With 17 percent growth in 2006, TI expanded its lead in analog with a 14 percent share of the global $37 billion market, according to a new report from Databeans Inc., a research firm.

TI led the fragmented analog market, followed in order by STMicroelectronics, Infineon Technologies, NXP, Analog Devices and National Semiconductor, according to the firm.

''Strong growth in 2006 was seen by NXP, which is focusing more on higher margin products for vertical markets,'' according to the firm. ''Other movers include Freescale Semiconductor, Intersil, and On Semiconductor. While Freescale showed strength in the application specific markets, On Semiconductor and Intersil both scored in standard linear sales,'' according to the firm.

LONDON — Samsung Electronics is planning to build an LCD assembly plant in Slovakia, with the initial investment being $155million. The facility will be in the western Slovak town of Trnava and construction scheduled to begin during the next few months.

Samsung already has plants in Slovakia making computer monitors and TV tubes. The LCD panel assembly facility, which could eventually represent an investment of $600 million, will commence operations next year, said Samsung.

Digital still cameras, camcorders, set-top boxes and now high-end phones will drive the need for compression and decompression at a fevered rate,” Sizemore added. On top of that, with Apple on the verge of entering the mobile-phone market with the iPhone, Personal Media Players/Recorders could start appearing everywhere.”
