The difference is that while sensors are seeing solid sales growth from a strong base, ZigBee is still waiting for market takeoff. It's hard to think of a market where sensor usage isn't expanding. Advances in many different forms are making it possible to improve precision for industrial control systems. The compact size of emerging sensors, which now routinely put two components in the size previously used for a single sensor.

The architecture, with multiple 66-MHz, 64-bit PCI buses, provides up to 1/2 Gbyte/second of simultaneous I/O data movement, enabling concurrent I/O, H.110, Ethernet and CompactPCI bus transfers,” she said.

The board contains two PCI mezzanine card expansion sites for customizing its communications capabilities, with PMC modules available for strategic I/O” such as T1/E1, asynchronous transfer mode frame relay, Sonet, Gigabit Ethernet or extra l0/100 Base T Ethernets. Support software is available.

There's been a lot activity of various web sites these days about the Image Constraint Token or ICT, as it's called, and there's some interesting rumors coming out of Europe this week. As we have come to realize with the first generation of HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc movies, ICT is not being invoked. Now, there's an unconfirmed report by a German-language news-paper that suggests that Hollywood studios, along with major consumer electronics makers, such as Microsoft Corp. and Sony Corp., have agreed not to implement image quality downgrades on hardware that does not support HDCP copy-protection and HDMI output for the foreseeable future. Of course, what this means that Blu-ray and HD DVD movies will playback in full-quality on HD DVD players, Blu-ray Disc players using component video.

Reportedly, behind the scenes it was supposedly agreed upon that till, at least, 2010, or possibly 2012, signals from Blu-ray or HD DVD players will be transferred to televisions or displays in full resolution, even if certain components do not support HDCP or HDMI, according to a report on Spiegel web-site. Particularly, this may allow next-generation game consoles, such as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as well as HDTVs and personal computers to playback Blu-ray and HD DVD movies in up to 1920×1080 resolution even on displays that do not support high-bandwidth digital copyright protection (HDCP) technology or HDMI output.

In the Hollywood Studios' zeal to track-down piracy, movie studios insisted to implement HDCP onto content distributed using the BD and HD DVD media. Typically, the playback of HDCP content should include an HDCP transmitter (HD DVD or BD player), a digital interface such as DVI or HDMI, and an HDCP receiver (as an HDTV). The content is encrypted at the transmitter and the signal is transmitted to the HDCP receiver via a special bus where it is decrypted before viewing. Both the transmitter and the receiver should comply with the standard. Otherwise, it was planned to limit the output resolution – using so-called image constraint token (ICT) – to 540p (960×540), which is a bit better than 720×480 resolution of typical DVDs, but far from high-definition 1080i or 1080p (1920×1080) resolutions; or turn-off” the analog signal entirely.

So, if the report is correct and the ICT will not be imposed for years, HDTV viewers will be able to watch high-definition movies on large HD monitors in full-quality 1080i or 1080p without any need to get a new HDTV set that supports HDCP. If you think about it, it's not really in the best interest of either Sony or Microsoft to want to invoke ICT as each are in the market to sell gaming systems, their related hardware, and BD and HD DVD players.

And, this could be the real reason behind the fact that neither Microsoft's Xbox 360 nor Sony’s entry-level PlayStation 3 consoles do not support HDMI output. In fact, Sony’ has stated recently that even with component video outputs it will be possible to view Blu-ray discs using the PlayStation 3 that costs $499 initially. Both PS3 consoles include Blu-ray disc playback as standard. The only difference is that the high end unit uses the new digital interconnect called HDMI, which is the emerging digital standard; and the 20GB entry-level unit uses HD component video that is an analog HD standard connection. The end user should not noticeable any difference in picture quality per se. Microsoft will be adding an HD DVD player accessory later this year that will use component video.

SAN JOSE, CALIF. — Epson Electronics America has added the E0C332L01 to its E0C33xx microcontroller family. It's a 32-bit RISC MCU with an LCD interface, analog-to-digital conversion and multiplication accumulation instruction. The part is aimed at portable applications such as digital cameras, PDAs and other handheld devices. MCU marketing manager Perminder Tumber said the part is suited for embedded applications with significant power consumption, form-factor and cost constraints.

The chip features 128 kbytes of ROM and 8 kbytes of RAM memory, plus an EPSON SED1374-compatible 4/8-bit monochrome/color LCD interface. It's available in QFP8-160 packages and in die form. It's priced at $11.50 in quantities of 100,000.

Is the time right for distributors to handle some of the design chores traditionally performed by chip suppliers?

Intersil Corp. thinks so, and it intends to recruit its distributors to jointly develop intellectual-property and chip-design services for second-tier and emerging customers.
