We took a cross-section through a dense logic area and measured the smallest gate lengths we could find and compared them with the ITRS road map,” said Edward Keyes, chief technology officer of Semiconductor Insights, referring to the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors. That says an LG [gate length] of 37 nm equates to a 90-nm process. We found the smallest LG was 70 nm, which equates to a 130-nm process. The ITRS specifies an LG of 65 nm for a 130-nm process.”

Part of the problem is the black-box nature of reusable IP, Billowich. Reusability experts have long urged engineers not to look under the hood on IP, but to use it unmodified. If you use it as is, it's IP,” Billowich said. The moment you modify it, it's a design consulting service.”

However, verification tools trusted by designers often don't work with black boxes. One definition of a quality metric, the panel suggested, might be a metric that gives the same level of confidence on black-box IP that a white-box verification would have given.”

IP indemnification is another issue. The reality is that big vendors simply won't indemnify users of their IP,” Kaskowitz said. The risks are too unquantifiable. Small vendors will sometimes do it, but it means nothing because if they were ever called upon to pay damages resulting from an IP fault, they would be forced into bankruptcy.”

One proposed solution is an independent organization to insure design projects, with rates based on the quality of third-party IP. Travers said VCX had established such a program in conjunction with a major insurance company, but so far has been met with indifference from designers. The idea is still out there, and they are still thinking about how to get it right,” he said.

SAN JOSE, Calif — Mentor Graphics Corp. has along with Intel Corp. developed drop-in core layout kits for OEMs and ODMs that design motherboards using Intel's latest chip set, codenamed Grantsdale.”

The kit, available through Intel, will provide an Intel reference motherboard design that integrates the CPU, chip set and other motherboard components for use with Mentor's Expedition PCB tool flow. The kit will allow personal computer motherboard OEMs and ODMs to shorten their design times, according to the companies.

Mentor said the drop-in core layout kit for Expedition will be available later this year following the introduction of Intel's new chip set.

Milpitas, Calif. – Designed for simpler, lower-cost, and highly efficient power supplies for telecom, networking equipment, and automotive applications, Linear Technology's LTC3703 DC/DC step-down synchronous controller eliminates the typical need for the (external) transformer and current-sense resistor. The resulting high-voltage (nonisolated) converter, according to the company, will cost less than a brick-style supply delivering comparable power. The LTC3703, as applied in a single-inductor design, withstands input surges and transients up to 100 volts; at the same time, the chip's feed-forward compensation circuitry reduces the effect of input-supply transients on the output. The controller includes 1-ohm on-chip gate-drivers to efficiently drive multiple N-channel MOSFETs for higher-current applications. Switching frequency is adjustable from 100 to 600 kHz. Other features include adjustable soft-start; very fast transient response (superior to flyback topologies, according to the company), owing to the chip's high-bandwidth (25 MHz) error amp; and resistor-programmable current-limiting.

The LTC3703 is offered in 16- and 28-lead SSOPs. It's priced at $3.10 each in 1k piece quantities.(800) 4-LINEARwww.linear.com

Spot market prices now have been up across the board for the last four weeks. Prices increased this week for all parts tracked by iSuppli Corp., with Double Data Rate (DDR) 400 SDRAM in the 32-Mbit by 8 configuration leading the move up with a 3.3 percent increase from the previous week.

Although the DRAM prices are on the rise in the spot market, conditions are different in OEM contract negotiations. Slow demand from PC OEMs is pressuring contract prices. Because of that, suppliers are facing tough going with their OEM customers during price negotiations for the first half of February.

The outcome of the negotiations is likely to be a mixed bag, with a combination of increases, decreases and flatness, depending on the customer.

Rising spot market prices serve as one of the market's most important leading indicators. The increases reflect a rise in trading activity compared to previous months when there were virtually no transactions and no inventory in the channel.

This rise in trading activity could serve as a mildly positive indicator that a market recovery could begin soon. If the upward pricing momentum in the spot market persists for a few more weeks, contract prices will follow.
