Necoro has tactile sensors in the head, chin and back. A microphone is built into the head, and an image sensor is built into a nose hole. Two accelosensors and one auxiliary sensor detect its position. It grows emotionally, depending on how it is treated by its owners. Patting it softly or hitting it will yield different behaviors.

The rapid adoption of 802.11a is being fueled by the market's interest in higher WLAN speeds, said Scott Ruck, enterprise product manager at Proxim Inc., Sunnyvale, Calif.

In wireless networking, there's always demand for higher bandwidth, not only because of speed but because of the capability to support so many multiple users and multimedia applications such as streaming DVD-quality video, which you can't do with any other wireless technology today.”

The most pervasive wireless protocol today, 802.11b has a maximum data speed rate of 11Mbits/s, compared with the 50Mbit/s-plus capability of 5GHz 802.11a.

The spate of OEM support for 802.11a can be largely attributed to those major electronics companies that didn't take advantage of the boom in wireless LAN devices based on the 802.11b, or Wi-Fi, protocol, said Allan Scott, business manager at Agere Systems Inc.'s Orinoco product line in Framingham, Mass., which claims the highest OEM WLAN market share.

These OEMs are obviously interested in coming up with something else after they missed opportunities in Wi-Fi,” Scott said.

According to Mark Bercow, vice president of marketing at Sunnyvale-based Atheros, 802.11a's precociousness as a standard is analogous to the advent of Fast Ethernet.

I think the uptake will be faster than conventional wisdom dictates now that the product is out there,” Bercow said. It's the same thing as when Fast Ethernet became the de facto standard within a couple of years after its introduction in the mid-1990s, when it replaced 10Mbit/s Ethernet.”

The standard's capability to transfer DVD-quality video streams is also attracting consumer OEMs. In Sony's latest announcement, the company said that it plans to offer 802.11a in consumer products, although it did not say when it would do so.

The sizzle of the announcement was about consumer electronics, although the meat was the 802.11a products they announced for the PC,” said Joseph Byrne, an analyst at Gartner Dataquest in San Jose. At the same time, 802.11a is off to a very good start, with leading OEMs announcing products for the standard because these are the companies with the established channels and marketing presence to help build momentum.”

Orion said that the engineering shortage of last year has not yet abated. We were so needy of technical folks a year ago that the job scene is not that bad for engineers and programmers. In management, it's another story.”

She also noted that the region no longer has many huge corporations other than Qualcomm. Since the early '90s, San Diego has been mostly small companies. About 96 percent of our companies have 20 people or fewer.”

Up north there are far bigger companies, and a fair number of them have cut more than 20 people. But even there, people say that the main reason things sound bad is because they're compared with the boom of 2000.

Here in Silicon Valley there's certainly been a dramatic change from what we saw a year ago,” said Mark Albertson, senior vice president of the AeA's California and Western U.S. operation (Santa Clara). That does not mean companies are not hiring. They are. But they're hiring in a much more focused, specialized way. The future products of many of these firms rely on finding the top technical people to design and manufacture them.”

Albertson said that engineers in older technologies used by a fairly limited number of companies will have a harder time finding jobs than those involved in newer technologies. In either group, moving to a new location is sometimes necessary.
