At the San Jose conference, Agere, AMCC, EZChip, IBM Microelectronics, Mindspeed, and others are planning to announce new products in the network processor space. Meanwhile, IDT, NetLogic, Silicon Access, and others will announce packet-processor devices, based on content-addressable memory (CAM) technology. The NPC trade show runs from Oct. 23-25 in San Jose.

Network processors are software-programmable devices that promise to boost the bandwidths in switches, routers, and other communications equipment. These low-cost merchants devices are also supposed to replace costly ASICs in systems.

But the market for network processors, CAMs, or even ASICs remains cloudy, for at least the short term right now. Since the beginning of last year, communications-equipment manufacturers and their chip suppliers have been hit hard by the current and sharp downturn.

Compounding the problem for the network-processor vendors is the fact that design cycles for targeted systems are long and painful. Some of these devices are not expected to be incorporated within next-generation networking equipment until 2004 or later, observed communications industry analysts.

On the other hand, the potential is still huge for network processor vendors. Analysts at Cahners In-Stat in Scottsdale, Ariz., believe the network-processor market will jump from $135 million in 2002 to more than $7 billion by 2005.

Meanwhile, prior to NPC's opening today, IBM Corp. will get the ball rolling by announcing the availability of its latest network processor products, based on its PowerPC 405 embedded RISC core. These products–called the NPe405L and NPe405H–are available in 200- and 266-MHz speeds, respectively.

Targeted for high-performance edge and access applications, IBM's PowerNP network processor lines enable OEMs to develop low-cost systems. IBM is tackling the issue of network processor programmability head-on, helping original equipment manufacturers more easily to take advantage of standard silicon components,” said Armando Garcia, vice president of network processing for IBM Microelectronics, based in East Fishkill, N.Y.

Not to be outdone, Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC) will announce what the company calls the world's first network processor that scales from 100-megabits-per-second to 10-gigabits-per-second operations.

The nP7510 chip from San Diego-based AMCC is a software-programmable device that supports several network services: Fast Ethernet, OC-3 to OC-192, Ten Gigabit Ethernet, packet-over-SONET, and ATM.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Intel Corp. here gave a rare glimpse of just how the company fans out its most advanced microprocessor fabrication technologies into new markets, including its upcoming foray into the radio-frequency (RF) and silicon-germanium (SiGe) chip sectors.

During a press briefing at Intel's headquarters earlier this week, the company outlined its major push into 0.13-micron technology (see Oct. 17 story ). As part of the briefing, Intel also discussed its technology driver strategy, dubbed the Process Technology Progression Model.”

In this model, the Santa Clara-based chip giant makes use of its microprocessor-oriented logic process as a baseline technology. This baseline technology is not only used for its processor designs, but it also can be utilized to fan out and accelerate the development of other chip technologies, said Brian Harrison, vice president of the Technology and Manufacturing Group at Intel.

Among those chip technologies include flash memories, embedded memories, and system-on-a-chip products, Harrison said. We are able to leverage our logic technology into flash,” he said.
